We met up with the Smith family for our third year yesterday on a perfect summer day at Lake St. Catherine in southwestern Vermont. The girls have grown and were as much fun as ever to photograph, having fun by the lakeside. It was hard work in the 90 degree weather, but somebody has got to do it!
Many thanks to the Smith family for having us over to visit!
Each holiday season for the last two years we have participated in the Vermont Arts Council’s Art Auction for the benefit of the Vermont Foodbank, offering up a family portrait session. Nancy won our first round, but waited nearly a year to schedule her session! It was a pretty nice day for early December in Vermont and we made the most of it, playing at some of our favorite spots around our hometown. We sent the family off to the Hub for pizza while we went back to the studio and edited the shoot. After dinner we had a premiere on our 100″ diagonal cinema screen. Everybody had a great time and Nancy ended up ordering a fine art canvas gallery wrap of her favorite image along with a bunch of gift prints.
The above image of the three of them with their heads together while laying on the great big rock was chosen for the gallery wrap.
We were delighted when Heather and Brian took the plunge and booked our first summer wedding for next year. They came up yesterday and spent an hour with us, walking around our 2 acre meadow, playing in the golden (but somehwat chilly) light.
We are really looking forward to their wedding next August at the Lilac Inn in Brandon, Vermont!
Sometimes our couples book so close to their wedding date that they barely have a month or so to schedule their couple’s environmental portrait shoot, and they wonder if it’s worth it? We definitely think so! Besides getting to work with us and build a comfort level for the wedding day, they get some amazing images of themselves, in love, but as yet unmarried. Ashley and Scott’s wedding is only two weeks away, but they really aced the weather when we decided to meet up at 4 pm on a Sunday afternoon in Johnson. The foliage was at its peak and the sun kept blessing us with directional gold light!
Many of our couples are unsure what to do during a portrait session, but other than dressing casually and wearing some good walking shoes, the key is to just forget we’re there, and have fun! We found a number of locations and kept things light and free-flowing, and the rest just seems to fall in place!
We first photographed this family in Stowe two years ago, and now again this summer at Lake St. Catherine! We love the freedom that portrait sessions provide us to play outside of the scheduling constraints imposed by weddings, for example.
Mom’s nickname among her friends is, “The Source” as she always seems to know where to get things and do things and she did not disappoint as she led us to a wonderful barn and an amazing scenic overlook after we got done shooting at their summer place on the lake.
